About

How It Works

If you are an individual seeking a residency, there are two options:

One is to apply directly to Shannaghe. We take applications periodically during the year. Applications are read anonymously. You can find out more here.

>>On acceptance, residents are offered a range of time slots, each from two to four weeks.

>>Costs include: the $25 application fee, and then, once you're here, a weekly cost of $100 (this helps us meet our costs). Scholarships are available; to apply for one, email the residency with need-based information.

>>The application is here.

>>The application for the Fellowship in Care is here.

On occasion, we support magazines and conferences in their efforts to promote great writing. In 2024, awards went to the winner of Another Chicago Magazine's nonfiction contest, and Camden, Maine's poetry festival. Keep an eye out for these opportunities. Meet our winners.

If you're part of an organization  serving the community through work on social justice, environmental, educational, or artistic issues, and you'd like to house visiting expert or practitioner, there are two options:

One is to call us at 312-802-2989. We'll want to know what the project at hand is, its potential impact on the community, and how a residency  can help your nonprofit or outreach budget.  We'll also need the timeframe involved and what you'll need. Then we'll ask you to formalize the request.

Or, you can write us an email, and we'll call you.

Shannaghe

How do you say it? Shan' ah  gkee. This is the tradition of bearing witness, keeping records, and storytelling, of wisdom and perception. Since we're in what was once New Ireland, we've chosen this Irish word.
