a residency

for writers, environmentalists, & others working on possibilities

About

The name, the place, the purpose

Shannaghe --Sha-nah-gkee--is the term for the truth-tellers of ancient Ireland, the storytellers, the historians.

Our primary program is  a residency--a solo experience--designed to support writers, environmentalists, photographers, and other creative thinkers at work on projects that elucidate the nature of being human on this planet. In particular, we're interested in work that draws on the powers of introspection,  storytelling, and research; affirms community; questions injustice; reshapes thinking; and/or maybe even delights. This includes temporary housing and/or meeting space for organizations, practitioners, teachers, and others  engaged in community projects.

It's a renovated horse barn--a complete little house--on a well-traveled rural road outside Belfast, Maine. Residents apply for opportunity to stay here.

Shannaghe

How do you say it? Shan' ah  gkee. This is the tradition of bearing witness, keeping records, and storytelling, of wisdom and perception. Since we're in what was once New Ireland, we've chosen this Irish word.
